Senior Patroller Emergency Management Module

The Senior Patroller Emergency Management Module (SEMM) focuses on leadership, problem management and decision making, utilizing the standards in the current OEC 5th Edition manual. SEMM certification is a recognition of having successfully completed this leadership course and is not a higher standard of OEC skills. The skills learned promote confidence in dealing with more complicated first aid scenarios involving multiple injuries and patients.

Training is done in the outdoor environment on snow, and involves participating in scenarios as a leader and helper. Instructors who are SEMM Trainer Evaluators (TEs) develop the scenarios to cover all aspects of Outdoor Emergency Care, and provide feedback during training sessions.

Candidates are required to successfully lead at least 4 scenario problems during the training sessions. Two scenarios from the Patroller's Manual need to be reviewed and have a treatment plan developed in writing. In addition the candidate is required to write an original scenario of Senior Patroller level, following the format in the NSP test banks.

The SEMM final evaluation is given at the conclusion of the course. It is conducted on snow and on typical mountain terrain. Candidates lead in one warm up scenario and two evaluation scenarios. Only the leader is evaluated in the scenarios.

Dear Senior EMM Candidate,

First, thanks for your interest, and initiative, in the Senior EMM program!

Following are the links to the Senior Candidate Application, as well as the Senior Core Electives and Activity Report. Both are in "Word" format, as well as in "pdf" format. Whichever is easier for you.

Senior Candidate Application:

Senior Core Electives and Activity Report:

These are also available on the nsp.org website. Click through "Member Services", then to "Member Resources". On the left there is a drop down menu for "Links"; click on that and then click on to "My Bookshelf". There you'll find a shaded bar "Reference and Resource Materials". Click the "Downloads" link in that subset and you'll find these documents there in the event that the embedded links don't work.

Insofar as manuals, if you don't have one already, please get yourself a copy of "The Ski Patroller's Manual" (14th edition). Your PD, or someone else on your Patrol may have a copy that you can borrow/use. That failing, you can buy one from the NSP online catalog (sku#501, $12.00):

In there you will find pretty much everything you need to know about the full Senior program; you can find it in Chapter 18 (pp. 127~148. The Senior EMM component is covered in pp 144~148). As an overview, the basic prerequisites for Senior EMM are as follows:
  • Basic Skills (OEC 5th Edition and Basic Life Support CPR)
  • Submit written answers to two open-ended practice scenario problems (scenario problems can be found in "The Ski Patroller's Manual", on pp. 179~187)
  • Create one new Senior level training scenario
  • Participate as a Leader in a minimum of 4 (four) training scenarios
  • Participate in training clinics
The 2 (two) sanctioned Training Clinics will be held at the following locations/dates/times:
  1. Mount Peter (Southern Catskills), Sunday, Jaunary 15, 2012, 8:30 AM
  2. Belleayre Mountain (Northern Catskills), Sunday, February 19, 2012, 8:30 AM. Registration will be held at the First Aid Room in the Overlook Lodge (Upper Mountain)
It is strongly suggested that all Senior EMM candidates to participate in as many practice scenarios as possible. It is also suggested that you be Lead in more than the required minimum of 4 (four) scenarios.
The practice scenarios historically have been coordinated by the Patrol Directors, on their respective hills.

To that end, any patrollers that would like to participate in Senior EMM training exercises of the Northern Catskills Section are welcome to attend/participate in the clinics run by Belleayre's EMS Advisor Ritch Parrish.
These training exercises are held each Sunday morning/afternoon throughout the 2011/2012 season. Please contact Mr. Parrish at rparrish@hvc.rr.com to advise him of your attendance/participation. Please also copy Belleayre's Patrol Director Jesse Nichols at janichol@gw.dec.state.ny.us
For all those patrollers attending the training exercises at Belleayre, please come in your patrol uniform, with your first aid pack.

Patrollers who wish to attend Senior EMM training exercises held in the Southern Catskills Section are welcome to attend/participate in the clinics run by the Senior EMM Trainer/Evaluators, conducted at Tuxedo Ridge throughout the 2011/2012 season. Please contact Donna Kirby, Patrol Director at dmk4772@yahoo.com

In all instances, kindly courtesy copy Roger Carlson at ArctexCo@aol.com.

The Final Evaluation sechedule for March 25, 2012 in the Southern Catskills  Section.  This will be confirmed  January 2012; please check back for updates on this webpage for updates.
Senior EMM Candidates are to be booted, and ready to ski/ride at each of the two sanctioned clinics as well as the Final Evaluation. This will enhance the realism of the training scenarios.

An Event Training Release Form will also be necessary for each individual clinic, and the final evaluation:
In order to save time at both the two sanctioned Training Clinics, and the Final Evaluation, please have these forms filled out, in advance, and ready to hand in the day of the scheduled event.

Please check the SNY Region calendar regularly for any potential updates, or changes to any of the above:

Again, thank you for your interest in the 2011/2012 Senior EMM program.
